Harrison awarded European prize for literature

Tony Harrison has been awarded the European Prize for Literature 2010 for his lifetime achievement as a poet, playwright and film-maker.

Harrison was given the prize at a ceremony in Strasbourg on 12th March, having been named the winner late last year. His volumes of poetry include The Loiners and Continous. Faber has been Harrison's publisher of plays and film poetry for more than 25 years while Penguin is his poetry publisher.

Stephen Page, c.e.o. of Faber, said: "Faber has had the great honour to publish Tony Harrison’s work for the stage and screen for nearly thirty years. It is work of brilliance and we are delighted that this prize highlights his position as a writer of significance not only in his own country but also internationally."

Harrison said: "I'm honoured to receive this prize. It is difficult for poetry, poetic drama and poetic films to make their way beyond their home language and it is a tribute to my European translators."
