HarperVoyager signs Okorafor's world fantasy novel

HarperVoyager has acquired a book from Nigerian-American fantasy author Nnedi Okorafor.

Jane Johnson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Who Fears Death excluding Canada from Donald Maass.

In a post-apocalyptic Africa, two tribes “fight a terrible war of annihilation”. Out of this conflict is born a child who belongs to both tribes and to neither. The child is named 'Onyesonwu: Who Fears Death?' and goes on to develop remarkable magical abilities.

Who Fears Death was first published in the USA by DAW books in 2010. It won the 2011 World Fantasy Award for best novel.

A television adaptation of the novel is currently in the early stages of development with HBO, the network which adapted George R R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels into “The Game of Thrones”, with Martin himself attached to the project as an executive producer.

It will be published in the UK in 2018, ahead of the television adaptation.

Johnson says: "Nnedi Okorafor is an extraordinary talent with a powerful voice and a unique vision. I'm extremely excited to bring her to the Voyager list."
