HarperCollins US titles on Scribd subscription service

US e-book site Scribd has launched a new subscription service, beginning with HarperCollins US backlist titles.

Scribd's new service will offer readers unlimited access to a catalogue of books for $8.99 a month. Books can be read on multiple devices via the cloud, including iPhones and iPads, Android devices and web browsers.

The website has more than 80m active users, and a library of 40m books and documents available for sale, including the entire HarperCollins US catalogue.

The new subscription model will feature backlist titles from HarperCollins US and HarperCollins Christian.

Brian Murray, president and c.e.o. of HarperCollins worldwide, said: "HarperCollins is excited to reach an innovative partnership with Scribd that monetises its audience through traditional retail and a subscription offer for our backlist titles. HarperCollins authors will benefit from extended reach, increased discovery, and improved royalty streams.”

Trip Adler, c.e.o. and co-founder of Scribd, said: "Since starting Scribd six years ago, we have gained a lot of experience building a library of books and written works, growing a global community, and gathering data on what readers and publishers want. Those insights have helped us build a product that we believe delivers on a new and better reading experience by giving our customers instant access to a vast collection of books to read, across a wide array of the top digital devices, all for one low monthly price."

Authors whose work will be available include Paulo Coelho, Neil Gaiman and Marian Keyes. Coelho said: "I’m excited to see HarperCollins experimenting with new business models. It demonstrates that they are not afraid to embrace new ways of expanding the reach of their authors."
