Fourth Estate will publish Katherine Heiny’s new novel and story collection. Heiny is the author of Standard Deviation and Single, Carefree, Mellow.
Helen Garnons-Williams, associate publisher at Fourth Estate and Williams Collins, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Felicity Rubinstein at Lutyens & Rubinstein. The novel will be published in hardback in summer 2021, with the story collection to follow in 2023.
Jenny Jackson at Knopf acquired US rights from Kimberly Witherspoon at Inkwell Management.
Set in a small town in Michigan, the novel is a story of love, friendship and country music. It follows Jane, a young school teacher, as she navigates the unexpected turns of life, accompanied by an array of different characters.
Heiny said: “I’m beyond thrilled to be publishing my third book with Fourth Estate. The characters are so real to me—it was hard to say goodbye to them, but I know they’re in good hands.”
Garons-Williams added: “We are overjoyed to be publishing Katherine’s highly anticipated follow-up to the wonderful, and much-loved, Standard Deviation. She has a rare and marvellous gift for making readers belly laugh even as their hearts ache for her characters, whose flaws, kindnesses and quirks are so warmly and believably depicted that they take up permanent residence in one’s head.”
