HarperCollins has bought the rights to 1936 novella Dean Spanley by Lord Dunsany, to tie in with the release of a new film starring Peter O'Toole and Sam Neill.
HarperCollins publishing director David Brawn acquired world rights from Camilla Hornby at Curtis Brown, representing the trustees of the Dunsany Will Trust and the General Film Corp.
Dean Spanley was originally published in 1936 and is described as a "humorous, wintry tale about dogs, reincarnation and the effects of alcohol". It has been unavailable for more than 30 years and was last repacked in 1973. The new edition, which is due in November prior to the film's worldwide release in, will include the film screenplay by award-winning screenwriter Alan Sharp and photographs from the film.
