Hachette Livre has sold its e-book distribution platform Numilog to its founder and c.e.o. Denis Zwirn, but will continue to use its services.
The deal means that Numilog will be able to distribute digital files, sell e-books directly or indirectly, and create and manage booksellers’ websites for all players in the book trade, Hachette Livre said in a statement.
Cathering Cussigh, the group’s digital and international development director, noted that the company had proposed to turn Numilog into a common platform for French publishing in 2008. But other publishers declined the idea, and maintained or formed rival platforms. “Today the market dictates that we restore Numilog’s independence to take account of potential customers’ desire to entrust their digital distribution to an independent operator,” Cussigh added.
Numilog, which was set up in 2000 and bought by Hachette Livre in 2008, has a catalogue of more than 50,000 titles. The price of the sale was not disclosed.
