Canongate has acquired world rights, excluding Australia and New Zealand, in Man Booker-shortlisted author Kate Grenville's new novel. Due to be published in February 2009, The Lieutenant will be Canongate's lead original fiction for next spring.
Jamie Byng, who negotiated the deal with Grenville's agent Barbara Mobbs, in partnership with Michael Heyward at Text, said the new novel was "certain to win [Grenville] even more fans".
Text will publish the book in Australia and New Zealand this October.
Grenvill's previous novel The Secret River, which is also published by Canongate, has sold more than 250,000 copies, and been translated into 18 languages. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2006.
