A tale of the last days of the British Raj has won the Romantic Novelists' Association (RNA)'s Romantic Novel of the Year 2009. Julia Gregson's East of the Sun (Orion) was announced the winner today (10th February) at the RNA's awards lunch in Kensington. The prize awardds "the best of the year's novels exploring the deep mysteries of the human heart".
The judges were The Bookseller's book editor Alice O'Keeffe, books editor of Woman & Home Fanny Blake, and Lovereading.co.uk's Peter Crawshaw.
O'Keeffe said: "Chairing the judging panel for the Romantic Novel of the Year was great fun. The strength of the shortlist meant every book was a pleasure to read but it did make the final decision very difficult. We are certain that the winner is a novel to cherish."
