Goodreads reveals Choice Awards winners

Neil Gaiman, Kate Atkinson and Malala Yousafzai are among the winners at the fifth annual 2013 Goodreads Choice Awards, which are based on members' top-rated titles.

The book recommendation site, with over 20 million members, has made awards in 20 categories.

Neil Gaiman won in the Fantasy category for The Ocean at the End of the Lane (Headline), which was also the book that received the most votes of any of this year’s nominations. Kate Atkinson won in the Historical Fiction for Life After Life (Doubleday), while Malala Yousafzai won the Memoir and Autobiography category for I Am Malala (Weidenfeld & Nicholson).

The only posthumous award went to J R R Tolkien for The Fall of Arthur (HarperCollins), which won the Poetry category.

Dan Brown’s Inferno (Bantam Press) narrowly beat Robert Galbraith’s (J K Rowling) The Cuckoo's Calling (Sphere) in the Mystery and Thriller category.

Goodreads analysed statistics from the 250m books added, rated and reviewed on Goodreads in 2013 to nominate 15 books in each category of the Goodreads Choice Awards. The final winners were all chosen by reader votes, with almost two million votes cast this year.
