Goodreads is planning to open its giveaway feature to e-books in the future, but has not yet found an "experience that is as easy and pleasing for the reader" as physical book giveaways.
Publishers and authors can give copies of their books on the online reading community to members, but the function is only open to physical books at present.
Speaking at the Independent Publishers Guild conference in Oxford yesterday (February 26th), Patrick Brown, director of author marketing at Goodreads, said barriers to e-book giveaways included the number of devices and DRM.
But he said: "We will get there eventually. I am excited to be able to offer that in the future."
The IPG conference opened with Brown giving advice to publishers on how to use Goodreads to their advantage, with the panel chaired by Osprey Group c.e.o. Rebecca Smart.
Amazon's Darren Hardy held a closed session for IPG members on how publishers can get the most out of working with the online retailer on the Kindle, the Advantage programme and more.
Richard Balkwill of Copytrain spoke about government initiative The Copyright Hub, while John Ingram of Ingram and
Mendeley co-founder Victor Henning addressing entrepreneurialism.
The conference continues today (Thursday 27th February), with a keynote speech by Faber c.e.o. Stephen Page.
