Good Housekeeping magazine is launching a book recommendation service in its February 2013 issue, with publishers invited to submit titles.
The magazine has a database of 10,000 readers willing to peruse books and answer a questionnaire saying whether they would recommend them, with those titles that are supported by a majority of people receiving a “reader-recommended” logo for the book cover.
The books will also be featured in the magazine and on its website.
Beginning with launch partner Random House, Good Housekeeping will send a copy of each book submitted to 50 people on its database, giving receivers a month to read it before first answering questions on the plot, to ensure they have read the book, and whether they would recommend it to a friend. Good Housekeeping will charge for the service and provide publishers with a report on what readers have said about the title.
Good Housekeeping editorial director Lindsay Nicholson said: “It is very difficult to get independent, non-agenda-driven suggestions about what one would like to read and this is an authentic way of doing it.”
