Gollancz has made two promotions in its editorial team, seeing editor Marcus Gipps step up to the role of editorial director and senior editor Rachel Winterbottom promoted to commissioning editor. Meanwhile Orion group publisher Jon Wood is taking on the publishing of the Terry Pratchett Estate.
Gipps, a 2012 Bookseller Rising Star who has been with Orion since 2011, takes the reins to become editorial director for e-book portal, the SF Gateway, from Darren Nash, who has left the company to return to Australia. Orion praised Gipp's publishing of Stephen Baxter's War of the Worlds sequel, The Massacre of Mankind, in particular, and expressed confidence "he will take the SF Gateway to new heights", in addition to continuing his work as a commissioning editor for Gollancz.
Winterbottom, previously senior editor, has been promoted to commissioning editor. Since joining Gollancz 18 months ago, she has proven to Orion her "keen commissioning skills", responsible for the "major" Gollancz debut The Last Namsara, publishing later this year. She also recently won the YA epic fantasy novel The Girl King.
Wood commented: “Gollancz is in the happy position of being the UK market leader in SFF at the moment - a result which is a testament to the strength and integrity of our core team here as well as to the strong leadership of publishing director, Gillian Redfearn.
"Marcus and Rachel’s promotions recognise both their enormous contribution to that success, and also their potential to take the list even further, both in finding the best new talent and driving the sales of our incredibly strong classics lists.”
Meanwhile Wood himself is to be responsible for the ongoing publishing of the Terry Pratchett Estate. In November 2017, Orion is publishing a new collection of Paul Kidby’s art, Terry Practchett's Discworld Imaginarium in multiple editions and, in 2018, it is planning a new calendar and new hardcover version of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens.
