George the Poet pens poetry collection

Virgin Books has bought the first collection of poetry from BRITs-shortlisted spoken word artist George The Poet.

Editor Elen Jones signed a deal for world rights with Charlie Brotherstone at Ed Victor Literary Agency for Search Party: A Collection of Poems.

Jones said: “George is a rare and exciting talent – it’s clear in his writing, his performance, his message and his passion. He is the voice of a generation. Search Party is a deeply autobiographical, thought-provoking debut collection, and we are thrilled to publish it.”

George The Poet added: "This book is a chance for me to describe my journey and help others find themselves through poetry."

George The Poet, real name George Mpanga, is known for his socio-political verse. The Cambridge-educated 23-year-old has been enlisted as an ambassador for The Duke of York’s iDEA initiative, as well as being a regular speaker for TED and an advisor for the BBC diversity trust. He has also been involved in the music industry, featuring on records by Labrinth and Emile Sande, collaborating with Idris Elba and supporting Nas, Maverick Sabre and Common on tour.

Virgin Books will publish Search Party at £7.99 in hardback in February 2015.
