Gallic Books has acquired a new novel by French writer Muriel Barbery, author of The Elegance of the Hedgehog.
Gallic bought UK and Europe rights in the book, titled The Life of Elves, to be translated by Alison Anderson. It has just been published in France by Gallimard almost nine years after the author’s breakthrough novel, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, which was also published by Gallic in 2008 and has sold 177,770 copies in the UK through Nielsen BookScan. Text has already acquired Australian and New Zealand rights, while Europa Editions will publish it in the USA and Canada.
The Life of Elves follows the fable-like stories of two girls: Maria, who lives on a farm in rural Burgundy, and Clara, a gifted pianist who moves from her village in Abruzzo to Rome in order to nurture her talent.
Jane Aitken, m.d. of Gallic Books, said: “Muriel Barbery has used beautiful prose to create an extraordinary universe that draws the reader in. As in The Elegance of the Hedgehog, time and place are richly evoked, but at the same time both are transcended, opening out into universal themes. I am certain Muriel’s loyal readers will be entranced by her new novel.”
Gallic Books will publish The Life of Elves in hardback and e-book in March 2016. UK sales will be handled by Compass Independent Publishing Services.
