The French Publishers Association has said the Google/Hachette Livre digitisation deal is a reversal in the internet company's strategy but warned it "has never respected its commitments as regards intellectual property law".
The Syndicat National de l'edition (SNE) said in a statement: "The content and implementation of the [memorandum of understanding], offered to French publishers, must be examined carefully."
As the association did not participate in the negotiations, it must now assess the impact of the pact "notably on intellectual property, the risk of a monopoly and the quality of the digitisation".
The pact makes no difference to the legal action taken by some publishers and the SNE against Google for having flouted copyright, it added.
