French publisher income drops 1.3%

French publishers’ net income fell by 1.3% last year to €2,652m from €2,687m in 2013, although the picture is “encouraging” for the first half of this year, the book trade publication Livres Hebdo has reported.

This was the fourth year running showing a decline, even though the drop was less marked than in 2013.

Figures to be presented at the annual general meeting of the French Publishers Association (Syndicat National de l’Edition, SNE) today (Thursday 25th June) show that book sales dropped by 1.7% to €2,517m euros in 2014, but were partially offset by a 5.5% increase in rights sales.
