Visitors at this year's Frankfurt Book fair were down 3.8% to 279,325, according to numbers released by the organisers. Trade visitors were down by a smaller 1.6% to 149,963 (152,530 in 2009) but exhibitor numbers stood at 7,539, up 2.9% on 2009 figures (7,314). There were 733 UK exhibitors and 807 from the US.
Frankfurt Book Fair spokesperson Katya Bohne said there was "a real thrust of energy" and an increase in deal-making, despite the dip in visitor numbers. Bohne said this year’s fair saw increased business at the Literary Agents centre "be it for the classic book or digital format", while a "minor decline" in eastern European exhibitors affected by the past year’s economic crisis was compensated for by the arrival of more technology companies.
She also picked out new ventures Storydrive, a meeting place for international media and entertainment, and Hot Spots, collective stands for technology companies, as two particular successes.
