Fourth Estate has bought a book about history of walking and the relationship Britons have with the countryside.
Commissioning editor Robin Harvie bought UK and Commonwealth rights to Ramble On from Ben
Mason at Fox Mason for an undisclosed sum. The book, by Sinclair McKay, will be published in spring 2012 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the Ramblers Association.
Harvie said: "Ramble On ...tells the story of how the simple past time of country walk and rambling were transformed from an often illegal pastime, which led to numerous skirmishes with landed gentry, to our most popular past time, especially in the new age of the staycation. From the Kinder Pass to Dartmoor, Ramble On is a celebration of a very British pursuit, and will appeal to loves of the great outdoors as well as minor masterpieces like Wild Places, Feet in the Clouds and Roger Deakins’ Wildwood."
Sinclair McKay writes for the Telegraph and Mail on Sunday and is the author of The Secret Life of Bletchley Park (Aurum Press).
