The Independent and Independent on Sunday are to run a major 14-day serialisation of Christopher Lloyd’s What On Earth Happened? (Bloomsbury) from Saturday 7th February.
Full-colour stand-alone pamphlets inserted into the newspaper will carry abridged slices of the book, which tells the story of our planet and its people from the Big Bang to the present day. The
serialisation is to be flagged on the newspaper’s masthead, and TV and radio advertisements are also planned.
Senior commissioning editor Richard Atkinson said: “Christopher has rare energy and we are building What On Earth? as a brand. We have a big book coming this autumn called What On Earth Evolved?, about the planet’s 100 most successful species.
"The Independent serialisation is a very nice deal as far as we are concerned—there is some money involved, but it is also about the boost to Christopher’s profile.”
What On Earth Happened? has sold 10,500 copies since publication in October, according to Nielsen BookScan. Bloomsbury will publish an abbreviated version, What On Earth Happened? . . . In Brief, as a £7.99 B-format paperback in June.
