Found in Translation longlist announced

Books in languages as varied as Afrikaans, Croatian, Romanian and Korean have made it onto the longlist for the inaugural Found in Translation prize for translated children’s literature.

The Found in Translation award was launched last December by agency Rights People and is open to any book from around the world for the five to 18 market that has not already been published in English.

The judges – translator Anthea Bell, Chicken House publisher Barry Cunningham, Pushkin Press publisher Adam Freudenheim, Henry Holt publisher Laura Godwin and Delacorte publisher Beverly Horowitz – chose 21 books for the longlist, all of which were “unusual and intriguing”, according to competition organiser Rachel Richardson.

“Everyone had at least one they were passionate about and determined to see through to the next round,” she said. “We selected the books that we wanted to read ourselves – and hopefully, some day we’ll be able to read them in English.”

The judges will now chose a select number of winning titles. The winners will receive an offer of representation from Rights People and samples of the winning books will also be published in a "Found in Translation" anthology, which will be released as an e-book.

The winners will be announced in March 2015.
