Fork-lift driver wins Sunday Times award

<p>Fork-lift-truck driver Adam Foulds has won this year&#39;s Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year award for his novel <em>The Truth About These Strange Times</em> (Weidenfeld). </p><p>Foulds, who is also a graduate of the University of East Anglia writing programme, saw off competition from fellow shortlisted titles: Nikita Lalwani&rsquo;s d&eacute;but <em>Gifted</em> (Viking), James McConnachie&#39;s <em>The Book of Love</em> (Atlantic), and two-times nominee Robert Macfarlane&#39;s <em>The Wild Places</em> (Granta) to take the &pound;5,000 prize.</p><p>Foulds&#39;s book won the unanimous backing of the three judges, Susannah Herbert, Andrew Holgate and Peter Kemp of the <em>Sunday Times</em> books pages. </p><p>According to the <em>Sunday Times</em>, the work&#39;s &quot;display of descriptive prowess, comic bravura, sympathetic characterisation and outstanding dialogue convinced them that Foulds is a new voice with an extraordinary future&quot;. </p>
