Floris Books has acquired two separate children’s titles from author Cathy MacPhail and her son David MacPhail.
Senior commissioning editor Eleanor Collins approached Cathy early in 2013 for a Scottish young teen novel while, independently, David submitted an outline for a series of Viking adventures.
“Cathy later told us she’d suggested David submit his book to us, and we’re so glad he did,” said Collins. “Not only do we have the pleasure of working with two great authors – one established and a talented newcomer – but it’s also an exciting first for Floris to publish a mother and son.”
Floris acquired world rights to Cathy’s teen novel Devil You Know, which is set on a Glasgow estate, from literary agent Caroline Sheldon. It will be released in paperback in March (r.r.p. £6.99).
The first two books in David’s series, entitled Thorfinn the Nicest Viking and Thorfinn and the Gruesome Games, will be published as Young Kelpies children’s books in July. Floris acquired the world rights from Julia Churchill at A M Heath. Books three and four will follow in March 2016.
Cathy is the author of more than 30 children’s books and Mosi’s War, published by Bloomsbury Children’s, is currently shortlisted for a Scottish Children’s Book Award. David is also author of Yeti on the Loose (Strident Publishing).
