Newly formed production company Monumental Pictures has acquired the film rights to Caitlin Moran’s novel How to Build a Girl (Ebury Press).
Moran and John Niven will adapt the book for the big screen, with Film 4 backing the project.
Moran’s debut novel follows teenager Johanna Morrigan, who lives in Wolverhampton with her large and financially struggling family, as she moves to London and becomes a music critic, reinventing herself as raucous Dolly Wilde along the way. It has sold 36,909 copies in the UK through Nielsen BookScan since its publication in June.
Debra Hayward, co-founder of Monumental Pictures, along with fellow film producer Alison Owen, told Variety: “Caitlin Moran is the wittiest writer on the planet and her creation, Johanna Morrigan stands alongside Elizabeth Bennet and Bridget Jones as one of the great female literary icons.”
