Fig Tree has acquired a memoir by contemporary performance artist, Marina Abramović.
Juliet Annan, publishing director of Fig Tree, bought UK and British Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in the as-yet-untitled memoir at auction from Caspian Dennis at Abner Stein in association with Kuhn Projects in New York.
Annan said: “Marina Abramović is one of the 21st century’s most iconic artists: hugely influential, fascinating, charismatic and adored. Her work has so many fans here at Penguin and I can’t wait to publish her story.”
Abramović’s has had an almost five decade career, in which she has collaborated with music stars Jay-Z and Lady Gaga, playwright and theatre director Robert Wilson and artist Matthew Barney, among others. In recent years, she has presented installations at the Museum of Modern Art and the Serpentine Gallery in London.
Her memoir will span her career from her early life in communist ex-Yugoslavia to her time as an a young art student in Belgrade in the 1970s, as well as her relationship with the West German performance artist Ulay, who was her lover and sole collaborator for 12 years.
Fig Tree plan to publish the memoir in November 2016 to coincide with Abramović’s 70th birthday.
