Fifty UK libraries sign up to Overdrive e-book app

Digital library supplier OverDrive has launched a free app enabling direct e-book downloads to iPads, as Penguin tops its downloaded books chart.

The OverDrive Media Console app enables library users to read e-books and digital audiobooks on their Apple device. There are more than 13,000 libraries signed up to the OverDrive scheme worldwide, but only 50 in the UK, including libraries in Croydon, Leeds and Derby.

The OverDrive website reveals that the most popular e-book downloads in British libraries are all Penguin, with A Tiny Bit Marvellous by Dawn French topping the adult fiction section, The Fry Chronicles by Stephen Fry the top non-fiction title and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan crowning the juvenile chart.

The app allows users wireless access to their libraries' ePub e-book and MP3 audiobook catalogue without using a computer. The e-book and audiobook titles from the library automatically expire in the app, so users do not incur a late fee.
