Faber signs ambitious debut

<p>In her first deal for a new writer in nearly a year, Hannah Griffiths at Faber has signed up Certainty, an ambitious first novel by Canadian writer Madeleine Thien.

Certainty draws on the author's Malaysian background to tell a story set in Vancouver in the present day and in Malaysia at the end of the Second World War. It focuses on Gail, recently deceased at the opening of the novel, and on the secret she kept throughout her life.
