Faber has acquired a “timely and important” book about single motherhood by Emma Brockes.
Hannah Griffiths, publishing director at Faber, acquired An Excellent Choice from Sarah Ballard at United Agents.
In the book, Brockes presents the “alternative” idea of women “settling down to a deadline”.
Griffiths said: “Emma’s direct, intelligent and funny unpacking of the assumptions around becoming a mother as well as her candid account of her own journey to conception made this proposal jaw-droppingly appealing. It is certain to ruffle feathers and delight readers in equal measure.”
Brockes writes for the Guardian and contributes to the New York Times and the New Yorker. She is the winner of two British Press Awards and won the Philip Geddes Memorial Prize for Journalism when she was at Oxford University.
Faber and Penguin US will publish An Excellent Choice in Spring 2017
