Faber Children’s is set to publish a cookbook and two children’s fiction titles from Sophie Thompson, actor and winner of this year’s Celebrity Masterchef.
Commissioning editor Alice Swan said when she received a manuscript about a boy who could talk to animals, she didn’t realise who the author was.
“The writing was funny, zany and wonderfully engaging. Little did we know that the author was THE Sophie Thompson,” she said. “And then Sophie revealed that she was a keen cook and just happened to be on 'Celebrity Masterchef'. When we tentatively asked whether she'd ever thought about a cook book she came straight into the office to show us her tattered, chocolate-smeared, well-loved first cook book and the idea for a family cook book arose.”
The cookbook, which will be published by Faber Children’s but sold on the adult list, is a series of family recipes. It will be published in hardback in September 2015 and will retail for £20.
The fiction series is entitled Zoo Boy and is about a boy who can speak to the animals at his father’s zoo. The first book will be released in Spring 2016 as a £5.99 illustrated paperback.
Thompson said the idea for Zoo Boy came from wanting to create a story to make her children laugh and added: “That the lovely Faber tribe have also persuaded me to get down and dirty with pots and pans and put together some family food ideas for a book is quite literally the cherry on the proverbial."
Swan acquired the world rights to all the titles from Lauren Pearson at Curtis Brown.
Thompson's sister and fellow actor Emma is also a children's author, writing Peter Rabbit stories for Penguin.
