Faber and Guardian News & Media have launched a competition for children to create a new cover for Lord of the Flies by William Golding, coinciding with the author's centenary year and the Guardian and Observer's "books season".
The competition is open to children aged 13 to 16, with submissions welcomed in any medium. The closing date for entries is 20th January 2012, with the judging panel to include Golding's daughter, Judy; Faber senior designer Eleanor Crow; graphic artist Neil Gower; and the Guardian's art and design editor Kate Abbott.
The winning illustration will be unveiled at an exhibition showcasing the best entrants at the Guardian's office in London in February 2012, with the winning design turned into a jacket by Faber's design team for the new educational edition of the book.
Guardian News & Media books editor Claire Armistead said: "I'm thrilled that the Guardian is involved in this competition, because I think it's vital that each generation finds its own imagery and makes its own sense of the world . . . I can't wait to see what sort of artwork they will produce."
