Hodder & Stoughton debut The Universe versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence will be a "Big City Read" in Bristol and Glastonbury in May, in a scheme run with The Reading Agency (TRA), and Bristol and Somerset library services and bookshops.
One thousand copies of the novel, released in paperback on 9th May, will be distributed to reader development officers based in the cities' libraries. Also available will be promotional materials including posters, authorvideos and prizes for reader feedback. Further activities include Alex Woods book groups, supported by Twitter feed @thingsalexknows, a Pinterest board, and website www.alexwoodsbook.co.uk. The author will take part in local events on 12th June.
The Universe versus Alex Woods is set in Somerset. Author Gavin Extence said: "I'm really looking forward to taking part in the Bristol and Glastonbury Big City Read project, particularly because the book is set in and around the area—and because I have no possession I value more than my library card."
TRA's Sandeep Mahal said: "Ambitious projects like this enable libraries to really engage communities and showcase all that's good about them without having to find extra funding. It is crucial in these tough times that more publishers are showing they are keen to work with The Reading Agency to build on their support for libraries, by investing more of their resources in this sort of joint working."
