Anticipation is mounting that Amazon will make an announcement about a second model Kindle Fire tablet next week, after the retailer announced that the first model had “sold out”.
The company has issued a statement saying that it no longer has stocks of the Kindle Fire device, which is only available in the US. Amazon has been selling it for nine months, capturing 22% of the market share.
The online retailer has stimulated expectation of an imminent new model announcement by inviting media to a press conference to be held near Los Angeles on 6th September, its subject undisclosed. The launch of an Amazon Appstore in five countries in Europe, including the UK, today (30th August) indicates it is likely to launch the Kindle Fire tablet here also.
Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and c.e.o, said: “Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead—we will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem.” He added: “This has been a big year for digital products on Amazon—all of the top 10 sellers on Amazon.com since Kindle Fire launched just less than a year ago are digital products.”
Waterstones has signed an agreement to stock Amazon’s Kindle e-readers in its stores, with the bookseller receiving a revenue share of very e-book downloaded from its in-store wifi, which is currently being installed into shops.
Kindle Fire in the US offers customers over 22 million movies, TV shows, apps, games, books, magazines and more. The company announced today that its appstore would feature promotions such as Free App of the Day and locally-relevant apps, such as Zolmo's "Jamie Oliver's 20 Minute Meals".
