William Collins has landed a “bold and provocative” book by former US Army Lieutenant General H R McMaster, who served as Donald Trump’s national security advisor.
The publisher acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Battlegrounds: The Fight for the Free World from Trump’s Former National Security Advisor. It will be published in the UK on 7th May and released in the US by Harper on 28th April. The deal was negotiated by Harper vice-president and executive editor Jonathan Jao with Amanda Urban and Raphael Sagalyn of ICM Partners.
“Across multiple administrations since the end of the Cold War, American foreign policy has been misconceived, inconsistent, and poorly implemented,” the blurb explains. “As a result, the West has fallen behind rivals in power and influence. Meanwhile, threats to security, freedom, and prosperity – from nuclear proliferation to jihadist terrorism – have grown.
“Drawing on 34 years of service in the US Army, including multiple tours of duty overseas and 13 months as national security advisor inside the Trump White House, McMaster has written a bold and provocative re-examination of the most serious foreign policy and national security challenges that face the United States, and consequently the world, today.”
McMaster was the 26th Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, lasting just over a year in Trump's administration before being replaced by John Bolton. During the 1991 Gulf War, he commanded Eagle Troop, 2nd Armoured Cavalry Regiment. In June he retired from the US Army after 34 years of service and in September will join Stanford University as a senior fellow.
Arabella Pike, publishing director of William Collins, said: “Battlegrounds offers a powerful call for all those who value democracy and freedom to transcend the vitriol of partisan politics and to concentrate instead on the most significant challenges to international security and prosperity for future generations. Drawing on his immense experience as a scholar, military commander and politician, and with America’s place in the world changing fast, H R McMaster has written a groundbreaking book.”
