Octopus imprint Endeavour will publish Gender Mosaic: Beyond the myth of the male and female brain by neuroscientist Professor Daphna Joel and science writer Luba Vikhanski.
Claudia Connal, publishing director at Octopus, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Deborah Harris of The Deborah Harris Agency via Anna Carmichael of Abner Stein. It will be published in hardback on 17th September 2019.
Gender Mosaic "sets out a bold and compelling argument that completely debunks the notion of gendered brains. Drawing on the ground-breaking results from her own lab and the latest scientific evidence, Joel sets out her radical theory that every individual human brain is actually a unique mixture – or mosaic – of typically ‘male’ and ‘female’ features," said the publisher. "With urgent practical implications for the way we understand the world around us, Gender Mosaic is a fascinating look at the science of gender – how it works, its history and its future – and a sorely needed investigation into the false basis for many of our most fundamental beliefs."
Connal said: "Daphna Joel’s research powerfully debunks many long-held beliefs about the differences between men and women that still persist today. In the vein of Mary Beard’s Women & Power, Gender Mosaic promises to be a bold, sharp-witted manifesto. Daphna argues for a future free of the burden of gender-based assumptions. We are incredibly proud to be publishing this important contribution to the discussion."
