<p>Customers have bought an average of &pound;1m of electronic gift cards per month since they launched in February, with over 600,000 cards being sold. More than &pound;9m has been spent since launch. Alex de Berry, commercial director at National Book Tokens, said he was happy with sales so far. He added: &quot;In very difficult trading conditions we are seeing like-for-like growth&quot;.<br /><br />The company said it would reveal details of a new press and online ad campaign for Christmas on the value of bookshops in the next few weeks. De Berry said: &quot;Book Token sales and redemptions are a very important footfall driver for booksellers across Christmas and the New Year. We are committed to ensuring that the system runs smoothly across this period for all our customers.&quot;<br /><br />De Berry added the system has now processed 1.2 million transactions and has experienced no serious technical or service problems.<br /><br />Student EGCs launched in August and de Berry said sales had so far been &quot;modest&quot; at about &pound;45,000. He added: &quot;It is still early days for the Student Book Card, the product is a long term commitment and we anticipate that it will take some time for awareness to grow and sales to build.&quot;<br /><br />Next year National Book Tokens aims to launch EGCs in Ireland.</p>
