Egmont YA list Electric Monkey has scooped a “thrilling and commercial chiller” for readers aged 14+ from New York Times-bestselling author Goldy Moldavsky.
Sarah Levison, senior fiction editor, and Lindsey Heaven, fiction publishing director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for The Last Girl from Gemma Cooper at The Bent Agency, on behalf of Jenny Bent. Film and TV rights were also sold by Jenny Bent at auction within 24 hours to Orion/MGM. It publishes in the UK on 15th April 2021.
Its synopsis explains: “When new girl Rachel Chavez joins an elite high school in New York City, she’s hoping to put a past tragedy behind her. A fresh start where nobody knows what happened to her, or what she did. But then Rachel stumbles across the Mary Shelley Club. The purpose of the club is simple: to see who can come up with the best Fear Test, terrifying a chosen victim.
"Despite the twisted nature of the club, Rachel starts to feel at home—she’s beginning to think she’s found her place. But then a sinister masked figure appears. As Rachel realises that her past has caught up with her, it’s time for the ultimate prank to play out…”
Moldavsky was born in Lima, Peru, and grew up in Brooklyn, where she currently lives. Her 2017 debut novel, Kill the Boy Band (Scholastic), was a New York Times bestseller.
She said: "I wanted to write a story of a group of misfit kids who come together through their love of horror movies. But the real fun part was then making them live inside a scary movie and seeing how much they like it."
Levison said: “From the moment the team started reading The Last Girl one dark and unnervingly quiet night, we got all the chills. And not just because this story is so deliciously terrifying and addictive, but because we knew we’d found an incredibly exciting voice in YA fiction. The Last Girl is reminiscent of those classic 1990s slasher movies such as 'Scream' and 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', which are being rediscovered and obsessed over by today’s teen audiences.
"We believe that ‘chiller’ fiction is the next big genre in YA and we’re delighted to have the very best of that, with Goldy Moldavsky’s The Last Girl, on the Electric Monkey list.”
