Egmont has signed a two-book deal with Sarah Driver for a middle-grade fantasy series.
Once We Were Witches is the story of two sisters, Spel and Egg, “in a version of our own world that has magic bubbling under the surface. It is guaranteed to capture the imagination of fans of Philip Pullman, Jessica Townsend and Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching books,” said the publisher.
Liz Bankes, commissioning editor, signed the deal for world rights in all languages with Jodie Hodges at United Agents. Once We Were Witches will publish in March 2020.
Bankes said: “We are utterly bewitched by Once We Were Witches. Much like Spel getting to step into other worlds, Sarah’s unique voice and unforgettable characters invite readers into worlds that are full of adventure and sparkle with magic. This promises to be one of 2020’s breakout middle grade series.”
Driver, whose debut The Huntress was also published by Egmont, said: “I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Egmont again, on this new series. I’ve been delighted by the enthusiasm for the project across the whole house, and feel that Once We Were Witches has found the perfect home. I’m so excited to bring the first book to readers next year.”
