Egmont to launch Red Shed

Egmont UK is the latest children's publisher to launch a new imprint, Red Shed, publishing non-fiction titles for readers from three to teenage.

Melissa Fairley will head Red Shed, having joined Egmont in May 2012 as publishing director for its picture book and gift lists. Also working on the imprint is commissioning editor Emma Dods, while Faith Brooker heads design. The formal launch is planned for this year's Bologna Book Fair in March.

The launch titles, in spring 2014, will include the first in a science series, iexplore! Under the Sea, by Dr Mike Goldsmith, aimed at bringing the ocean depths to life for pre-schoolers. In One End and Out the Other, also by Goldsmith, will be a book about digestion for 5–7-year- olds; Oh No It's the Romans by Clive Gifford, illustrated by Ben Scruton, for 7–9-year-olds, takes a humorous look at the Romans; and Richard Platt's Impossible tackles events that should technically be impossible and is aimed at children aged eight and above. Fairley also has plans for digital products for the imprint, producing e-books as standard, plus apps, some of which will tie in to physical books, and some standalone.

Fairley said: "Start-ing a non-fiction imprint means we can offer everything possible for children and for our international customers. We do a lot of research and know that boys gravitate towards non-fiction and allows them to be immersed in a subject they love. We will be creating 'faction' non-fiction that is presented in a creative way, that is commercial and a pleasure to read."
