William Heinemann (WH) is publishing David Vann’s new novel Aquarium (March, £18.99), illustrated by WH assistant editor Anna-Sophia Watts.
The novel tells the story of a girl who befriends an older man at the local acquarium. WH publisher Jason Arthur said: “David was keen to include pictures of the fish, but the colour photographs his US publisher had chosen were too obtrusive for my taste —I preferred having elegant line drawings that punctuated the narrative rather than overwhelmed it.”
Watts happened to be drawing seahorses for her sister’s wedding invitations around the time that the book was being edited. Arthur saw them on Watts’ desk and asked her to try drawing fish: “I loved the results, so did David, so she got the commission. I do wonder if she just happened to be drawing some sealife as I passed because she wanted the gig!”
