E-tailer Fishpond targets publishers

Online retailer Fishpond.co.uk is looking to build relationships with publishers large and small as it aims to expand its 4.5 million book offering.

UK country manager Sian Wells said the company had accounts set up with the top six UK publishers but wanted to expand its range. "We want to be able to offer our customers everything and anything," she said. The e-commerce site has been operating in the UK market for a year.

Fishpond.co.uk operates independently, but shares technology with the New Zealand site, established in 2004. There is also a Fishpond site in Australia. Books are its primary category, although the e-commerce site also stocks music, toys, clothing and health and beauty products.

Wells said the UK site stocks eight million products, selling one item every 13 seconds and gaining one new registered user every 1.3 minutes.

"In order to be able to compete with the likes of Amazon and other retailers, our focus is on great prices, free delivery and fast, reliable service," said Wells.

The site’s customer base is growing "organically" through word of mouth plus digital marketing, she added.
