E L James tops chart for third consecutive week

E L James' Fifty Shades of Grey was once again the bestselling book in the UK last week, and tops the Official UK Top 50 for a third consecutive week.

The £7.99 novel, which sold for just £4.05 on overage last week due to high levels of discounting, sold 55,051 copies in the seven days to 5th May, bringing total sales of Arrow's mass-market edition, released last month, to 193,400 copies.

Sequels Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed take positions two and three in the Official UK Top 50 with sales of 36,185 and 30,885 copies respectively.

Patricia Cornwell's Red Mist (Sphere) takes fourth position in the chart, ahead of the three "classic" editions of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy. In total, Collins' series for young adults sold 86,500 copies across all print editions last week, taking £435,000 through bookshop tills.

New entries into the Official UK Top 50 are led by Charlaine Harris' latest Sookie Stackhouse thriller, Deadlocked (Gollancz), which sold 14,860 copies in just three days — a 2012 record for a hardback novel.

The book comfortably takes pole position in this week's Original Fiction chart, and scores Harris her third consecutive number one. Both of her previous novels, Dead Reckoning and Dead in the Family, reached top spot in the chart.

In a double celebration for Harris' publisher, Orion, the Hairy Bikers have returned to pole position in this week's Hardback Non-fiction chart. The hirsute duo's The Hairy Bikers' Big Book of Baking (Weidenfeld) sold 7,345 copies at UK booksellers last week—up 30% on its previous week sales.

It means Orion have become only the fifth publisher in the past five years (after HarperCollins, Transworld, Simon & Schuster and Penguin) to top both the Original Fiction and Hardback Non-fiction charts simultaneously.

In total, £24.5m was spent at UK booksellers in the seven days to 5th May — up 5.1% week on week and up 5.1% on the same week last year, when Cornwell's Port Mortuary (Sphere) topped the bestseller lists with a 28,632 sale.
