Random House Digital director Fionnuala Duggan is to leave the publisher for digital learning company CourseSmart, where she has been appointed managing director for international.
The California-based company, which provides e-textbooks and digital course materials, aims to expand globally, including establishing a presence in London, following Duggan's hire. At Random House, Duggan was in charge of the publisher's digital business across e-books, audio and web.
Sean Devine, c.e.o. of CourseSmart, said: “Fionnuala is a respected leader throughout the digital media industry with nearly 20 years of industry expertise and a proven track record of developing and achieving global expansion. She will be instrumental in establishing CourseSmart’s international e-textbook platform and digital course material offering in the UK and, ultimately, in other international markets.”
Random House UK is looking to appoint a replacement to lead its digital team. Its deputy chairman Ian Hudson said in an email to staff: "In the five years Fionnuala has been with us as digital director, 'digital' has transformed from an emerging opportunity to a successful business reality with The Random House Group now firmly established as trade publishing's digital market leader.
"She leaves in place a truly terrific team working on some ground-breaking creative initiatives and a strong audio and e-book commercial programme."
