DreamWorks Animation creates own children's imprint

DreamWorks Animation is bringing its publishing in-house by launching Dreamworks Press, to publish digital and print books inspired by its IP library.

"Publishing is a crucial component of any successful franchise, and owning and developing this capability in-house will give us an unprecedented platform to expand the worlds of our most beloved characters as well as introduce families to new characters from within our library,” said Shawn Dennis, head of franchise at DreamWorks Animation.

Book apps in the pipeline include Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Shrek and the upcoming B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations, with further details yet to be revealed, plus assets from the DreamWorks Classics portfolio and recent acquisition Awesomeness TV.

The new venture, run by Emma Whittard, will begin publishing later this year and the material generated in North America will provide “a wealth of book assets for the studio’s international licensees”, said the company.

US publishing company the Perseus Books Group will sell and distribute the books through Perseus' Publishers Group West distribution unit.
