The Walt Disney Studios is developing a film adaptation of the first two novels in Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series, with Harvey Weinstein as producer.
Motion Picture Production president Sean Bailey said Artemis Fowl was "a natural fit" for the studios because of "its balance of mystery, adventure and family appeal".
Weinstein said: "This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old."
The screenplay is being written by Michael Goldberg, who wrote the screenplay for "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", with Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal as executive producers.
Colfer said he was "thrilled" that the project had been given the go-ahead. "It was definitely worth waiting for such a fantastic team and I really believe that a group with so much pedigree will put together an amazing movie," he said.
