Little, Brown has acquired the rights to Hild by Nicola Griffith, which will be the first hardback published by digital-first imprint Blackfriars.
Editor-in-Chief Antonia Hodgson acquired UK rights from Devon Mazzone at Farrar, Straus & Giroux, which published the novel in November.
Set in 17th-century Britain, the novel is drawn from the story of St Hilda of Whitby. It follows the young Hild, who is fighting to survive in the dangerous court of Edwin, King of Northumbria – her ruthless and ambitious uncle.
Hodgson said: “Hild isn’t so much a novel as a time machine, throwing the reader back into another age that is vividly, compellingly real. It is a truly exceptional novel and I am thrilled and honoured to publish it. In fact I am completely obsessed with it.”
Griffith said: “I’ve been aching to see this book available where Hild and I both grew up. It’s my love song to Britain – and Hild’s part in its making."
Hild will be published as an e-book by Blackfriars on 10th April and in hardback on 24th July, priced at £17.99.
