David Fickling Books has acquired Carlie Sorosiak's first work of non-fiction for children, Roar Like a Lion, illustrated by Katie Walker.
Aimed at ages nine to 12, the book features facts and anecdotes about the animal kingdom and the lessons humans can learn from animals. They synopsis explains: "Can a wombat offer us life lessons on kindness? Can we learn bravery from the meekest of hedgehogs? The answers to these questions and many others can be found in the pages of this remarkable, beautifully illustrated book, as we look to the natural world to show us humans the way.
"Bursting with fascinating facts, remarkable true stories and a whole lot of heart, Sorosiak and award-winning illustrator Katie Walker have created an uplifting call to arms, inspiring children to listen to the roar of the wild and grow as human beings… while having plenty of fun along the way."
World rights, including audio rights were secured by DFB publishing director Liz Cross from Claire Wilson at Rogers, Coleridge & White on behalf of the author, and direct with the illustrator. The book will be published in paperback in October 2021, with cover and inside illustrations by Walker.
Sorosiak has sold 34,141 books for £195k, with I, Cosmo her bestseller on 26,823 copies sold through Nielsen BookScan's Total Consumer Market. Commenting on her first non-fiction work, she said: “I’m utterly delighted that Roar Like a Lion will be published by DFB, a publisher I’ve long admired. It’s a book so close to my heart, and Liz and everyone at DFB have enthusiastically shared my vision from the onset. Pairing animal wisdom with Katie Walker’s brilliantly colourful illustrations, this book – I believe – has the potential to make a marked difference in children’s lives.”
Cross added: "Roar Like a Lion is just a joy – a book that’s both empowering and entertaining. Carlie Sorosiak starts with a simple idea – if animals could talk, what advice would they give us? – and develops this with her trademark wisdom, warm-heartedness and humour into a book that honestly makes me smile every time I think of it. Katie Walker’s stylish artwork complements the text perfectly and helps make this a very special book which we couldn’t be more proud to publish.”
