David Fickling Books (DFB) has acquired Jenny Downham’s third novel, titled Unbecoming.
Fickling, who published Downham’s first two novels while running DFB as an imprint of Random House, acquired the world English rights from Catherine Clarke at Felicity Bryan Associates
“Unbecoming is an astonishing feat of story-telling, a wonderfully life-affirming book about identity and desire and learning to honour your own stories,” said Fickling. “Jenny is one of the most thoughtful and sensitive writers I know, and with this book – her best, I think – she is writing at her absolute peak.”
The book is about the relationships between 17-year-old Katie, her mother and her grandmother. It is a “searching account” of the impact dementia has on a family and a “vivid and exhilarating celebration of life and love across three generations”, said the publisher.
The novel will be published in hardback by DFB on 3rd September 2015, priced at £14.99.
Downham’s previous two novels were You Against Me, which won the ‘best book for teenagers’ category of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2012 , and Before I Die.
