David Fickling Books (DFB) has bought the debut YA novel from Liz Flanagan, an author and former commissioning editor based in Hebden Bridge.
Eden Summer, set in the countryside of West Yorkshire, is about a girl called Jess as she retraces the events of the summer in an attempt to find her missing best friend, Eden.
DFB bought the world rights to the book, as well as a second novel, from literary agent Ben Illis.
Publisher David Fickling said: “Liz is a special and rare new voice, she captures the very essence of what it is to be a teenager. The heartache, the trauma, the lies and the love between friends. This book will make you cry, but it will also remind you that for every tear in life there are some of the greatest moments of joy.”
Liz Flanagan grew up in Hebden Bridge and returned there 10 years ago to raise her daughters. Until recently, Flanagan ran the Ted Hughes Arvon centre and has previously worked as a commissioning editor in the children’s book trade.
