Canongate has bought a children’s book written by the lead singer of American indie rock band The Decemberists.
Senior editor Francis Bickmore bought UK and Commonwealth rights (excl Canada, Australia and New Zealand) to Wildwood by Colin Meloy from Angharad Kowal for Writers House.
The book is illustrated by Meloy’s partner Carson Ellis and is about a young girl’s journey into the Impossible Wilderness to recover her baby brother, who has been kidnapped by wild crows.
Bickmore said: “Wildwood is an utterly enchanting tale with the most brilliant headstrong heroine. It will pull in young readers as well as adults who still love Watership Down, The Princess Bride, the Narnia books and Wicked.
"Meloy is one of the most brilliant narrative songwriters working today and it is no surprise that, after twelve years’ work, he has penned an unforgettable book. Carson Ellis’s illustrations will sweep people away. We’re excited about generating a wide readership from Colin’s 1.25 million Twitter followers and beyond, and publication at the start of 2012 is going to be a real event.”
