December launch for Bilbary e-lending

Online retail site Bilbary will launch its e-lending service in December, beginning with a focus on the academic market.

Founder Tim Coates right said that the website, which went live in the UK last month for the sale of e-books, will have 40,000 titles ready for lending, a figure he expected to grow rapidly to 100,000.

Coates said: “We have a lot of support from publishers such as Taylor & Francis. We hope it will supplement university libraries—students are often all looking for the same book at the same time, so this gives them somewhere else to get it. The budgets aren’t there for libraries to have more copies, but this provides another revenue stream for publishers.”
He added that he hoped the lending model would be extended to trade publishers and general readers within the next year.

Coates said: “I think lending will solve the issue people have with whether or not they are buying an e-book, or just buying the permission to read it on their device.”
