Hodder Children’s Books has acquired Lots of Frogs, the debut picture book from journalist Howard Calvert, illustrated by "up-and-coming talent", Claudia Boldt.
Emma Layfield, picture book publisher, Hodder Children’s Books brokered the two-book deal for world rights with Jodie Hodges at United Agents on behalf of Calvert and Paul Moreton at Bell Lomax Moreton Agency on behalf of Boldt. Lots of Frogs will publish in 2018.
Layfield said: "We are thrilled to win a multi-publisher auction to acquire Lots of Frogs by a brand new picture book pairing. Howard Calvert’s brilliant rhyming text about frogs escaping in the classroom is perfectly complemented by deliciously funny illustrations by Claudia Boldt."
Hodges said: "I’m so pleased that Howard’s debut children’s book will publish with Hodder Children’s Books. He and Claudia are a delightful duo and it’s fantastic that they will be part of an impressive, dynamic picture book list."
Calvert is a journalist at ShortList magazine. In 2015, he was runner-up in the Greenhouse Funny Prize. Boldt went to the Glasgow School of Art and Kingston University where she graduated with a Masters in Illustration. In 2011 she was awarded the BookTrust Best New Illustrators Award in the UK.
